A Pilgrimage to Maine
A few weekends ago, the hubs and I spent a whirlwind four days in Maine. Steve's family is originally from there, and we hadn't been back in eight years! As soon as we paid off our loans (another post;), we made it a priority to go back and visit! We arrived via redeye early Friday morning in Boston, where Steve's parents met us on their drive up from Pennsylvania. Then, we headed north!
A small park we stopped at along the way.

It was so fun to have as much time as we did visiting with family. Steve's grandpa is over ninety years old and sharp as a whip. He lives completely on his own in the house he built sixty years ago for his family, and even recently bought a new car. I love it! We got to hear all about his time in WWII and Steve's heritage--his ancestors came over just after the Mayflower, French nobility fleeing persecution. Imagine that!
The view from the backyard--the house Steve's grandpa built over 60 years ago!
We found this beautiful covered bridge and couldn't resist taking some photos. New England is pretty famous for these and although I grew up around them in Pennsylvania, I couldn't remember why they used to build them this way and had to look it up. Apparently, it was to protect the wooden planks of the bridge itself!
The funny part about this photo is that we didn't notice the graffiti until afterwards!

We took a short drive to check out a local ski resort, Sunday River. The view from the ski lift was so worth it!
How funny and cool is it that there were all of these wildflowers at the top of the mountain?! I loved it!

We made sure to hit the L.L. Bean flagship store on our way back from Maine to Boston for our flight. L.L. Bean isn't as big of deal in the PNW, but it's huge in New England. Their flagship is kind of like REI meets Cabelas.
I loved this wall of (one of two) of catalogue covers from the time the company was founded in 1912. What?!
It poured rain all day while we were out, so by dinner time we were ready for some comfort food. The lobster mac and cheese at the Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro was to die for! I managed to stick to plan throughout the trip, but I decided to splurge here and use this as my weekly cheat meal. No regrets!
We loved the cozy ambience and lighting inside. After trudging through puddles all day, it was a welcome retreat! The place was packed so we were lucky to get a spot at the bar! I'd definitely suggest calling ahead for a reservation.
Our last stop was the New Balance factory store. I fell in love with this rustic steel flag in the entryway. Someone please make one of these for me!

Although our time was short lived, seeing Steve's grandfather and uncles meant so much to us. We'll definitely make a point to visit more often!
